What is Hockey Edmonton Recreational League?

The program will offer participants Boys and Girls - teams are co-ed, a less structured program with fewer practices. The focus will be on participation, fun and playing with friends. It is a no contact, no slapshot alternative to the current mainstream hockey model. It will be similar to Adult recreational leagues however it is restricted to minor hockey players aged 11-17 by December 31 of the current season.  The program is open to all players residing in Edmonton and surrounding areas such as St Albert, Sherwood Park, Leduc, Spruce Grove, Bon Accord etc..

How will it operate?

The Hockey Edmonton Recreational League would operate as a parallel league identical to the Federation program. They would be directly under the Federation program. The League administration arranges schedules, recruits league directors, monitors teams/players, develops league rules, co-ordinates referees, etc...

Teams would play games against all other teams within their category. No standings would be kept and there will not be any playoffs.

What are the age categories?

Initially, the categories will be Peewee (11 & 12) Bantam (13 &14) and Midget (15-17). Depending on the success of the program categories may have to be combined or modified. If there is substantial growth, a natural outcome may be divisions within the categories. If there were insufficient numbers in the categories, it may be changed to age groupings. This would be finalized once registration is completed and numbers are determined.

What if my skill level is not high enough or too high for my category?

We will do our best to place a player where he/she is most comfortable.

Are the rules different than mainstream hockey?

Teams would play under the current Hockey Canada playing rules with the exception of no body checking and no slap shots. Players and officials would be subject to the same discipline as competitive teams for similar offences. It will be more severe for certain types such as fighting and other major offences. All players will be advised of the differences before starting play. Full equipment is mandatory including mouth guards.

Will we have referees?

Certified Hockey Alberta Referees will be assigned for all games.

How many games will I play?

The league will offer 18 games (1 per week) beginning at the end of October and ending in March. There will be 1 practice for initial team formation and familiarization, and 1 practice half way through the season.

Are there any playoffs?

No, standings will not be kept and there are no playoffs.

How long are the games?

All games are 1.5 hours in length.

What days will I play on?

Games will be scheduled on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

How much does it cost?

Registration for 2010-11 has been set at $300.00 per player.

What if I can't afford the registration fee?
There are organizations who can help out with the fee.  You can contact the EMHA Alumni Community Funding or KidSport.
